Dressing Room Talk
I performed my first post mastectomy fitting for bras and a prosthesis in 2003 when I worked at a shop in Nashville, TN. I wasn't a fitter then, but it was a Saturday and I was the only one working. A woman came in for a fitting. At first I explained that our fitter would be back on Monday and offered to make her appointment. She explained that she had driven two hours and really needed products that day. I thought to myself, "well this isn't rocket science" and proceeded into that dressing room to do my first fitting. My approach that day was to try on every bra and prosthesis we had until we found what she liked. She was thrilled to get products she liked and needed, and I knew from that day forward, that fitting breast cancer patients would be my favorite part of the job!
Since that day, I became a certified fitter and have helped hundreds of women find products they need in the size and style they like.
I love meeting survivors. I love hearing about their journeys and absorbing some of the wisdom they share. I love helping a woman look good in her favorite clothes, giving her some self-confidence back. I love seeing the hope in her eyes and knowing that she's ready to get back to life!
So often a woman who's recently had breast surgery, will walk in wearing a loose fitting shirt with shoulders slumped to hide her chest. It brings tears to my eyes to see her find a prosthesis that fits just right and a bra that is comfortable and pretty. But what really gets me is watching her leave. Shoulders back and head held high. Watching her get just a little bit of herself back. That's why I love what we do!
If you have had breast surgery and haven't been fitted for a properly fitting prosthesis and bras, I beg you to try. So many woman say to me things like, "I never knew it would feel this realistic" and "I never thought I could look like this again." I have seen women using shoulder pads, foam, and even a pouch of birdseed to try and replace their missing breast, but none of those items compare to a silicone breast form. And if your insurance covers a custom breast form, you will be amazed at how realistic and comfortable it is to wear.
